Florence Forth Virtual: How Does A First-Timer Celebrate Heroes?

February 15, 2022

Thank you Meg for sharing your plans for Florence Forth Virtual and In-Person!

Are you still unsure how to create your Florence Forth Virtual Event? Our new Director of Patient Support, Programs and Administration focuses on the event everyday. We asked her a few questions and found out how she’s celebrating her heroes this year.

Q: Is this your first time to participate in Florence Forth?

A: Yes, this is my first time to participate but I was involved in 2020. It was the Sunday morning after the road race in Durham and I taught a Yin Yoga class. Participants included people with AE, family members and several very tired staff members supporting the event.

Q: How do you plan to participate this year?

A: I plan to participate both in the In-Person Road Race and the Virtual Event. I live near Durham and look forward to enjoying the downtown Durham neighborhoods with 500+ people and a few of my friends.

The time frame for the Virtual Event is March 4-6. In an attempt to increase awareness, my idea is to wear my purple cape the entire weekend. Hoping this may generate a few questions and I can do my part to educate others.

Q: Who are you running for?

A: Wow! It’s not just one person. In almost three months with the Alliance, heroes are everywhere. I run for the entire AE community. If you know anyone with AE, you realize everyone is impacted. Everyone has super powers. I run for the support group members and leaders, the people that have emailed me, family members and the AEA Board Members. Also, there is a sweet spot in my heart for the super heroes that participated in the Refuel You Program. Maybe it’s why I am doing both events … so many super heroes to honor in one weekend.

Q: Anything else you’d like to say?

A: The experts said it so well. I agree with Therese, Rachael, Lisa and Jackie. Yes, this is a fundraiser and that is important. Raising awareness is also critical. If we all come together, we accomplish both. So, let’s have fun with this. Make your virtual event be whatever brings you joy. Maybe a walk, a bike ride, a lunch with friends or maybe you wear a cape all weekend. As Jackie said, “I know for certain, AE is anything but fun, so it’s important to cherish the little things and the small moments where you can find them.”

Also, if you’d like to join a team, join Team PWS. I am a wee bit competitive so help me have the biggest team! Currently, there are two people on my team. Only 15 more to be the biggest team.

Hope you join us for the 2022 Florence Forth Virtual Event. We look forward to seeing your pictures.
