Volunteer with AEA
We are constantly astonished at the generosity of giving, even while going through unimaginable difficulty. A willingness to “pay it forward” is at the very heart of what we want to accomplish every day through the Alliance. You are inspiring! There are several ways you can donate your time to impact the lives of the AE community. If you are interested in one or more of these opportunities, please sign up to volunteer.
If you are a physician, have some experience with treating AE patients, and are willing to be publicly identified as a resource for patients who may have an AE diagnosis, please join our AE Clinicians Network.
Host an information session or fundraiser in your community. AEA can help by providing handouts, giveaways and/or raffle items (e.g. signed copies of Susannah Cahalan’s New York Times best-seller, Brain on Fire, AEA stainless steel coffee mugs, bound notebooks, etc.), and propose ideas on how to have a successful event. We know it is often difficult to explain AE to family members, coworkers, and friends. Hosting an event disseminates knowledge to aid others’ understanding, and spreads awareness of the disease.
Volunteer for the Florence Forth running/walking race. The Florence Forth road race, held annually in Durham, NC, on the first Saturday in March, is the largest annual fundraiser for AEA. It take a ton of volunteers to host 1400 runners and walkers. You will have a ball being part of the event. We always need people to help with registering runners, passing out water on the course, directing racers, putting out traffic cones, etc. We have needs on both race day (Saturday) and the day before the race (Friday).
Be a guest blogger. Aren’t sure how to help? Everyone has a story, and we’d like for you to share yours. Don’t worry: we can provide post help, including editing and formatting. We receive so many compliments from those who have found comfort reading about others’ experiences through our blog, and just as many kind words from those who write for us and find solace in sharing their story.
Participate in our Patient to Patient Peer Support Network. Connecting people with similar experiences is something we do at AEA. While we make many connections because of individual requests, we are currently developing this network to support those seeking a dialogue with a peer who has first-hand experience of coping with this illness. If you want to be a participant in connecting to others affected by the disease, please sign up to volunteer.
