Autoimmune encephalitis community loses an amazing doctor far too soon

A very heavy heart, shock, and sadness met our hearing of the news that  Dr. Jessica Panzer passed away after a short, courageous battle with non-smokers lung cancer. She received M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006. She continued on at the University of Pennsylvania and the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia as a dedicated pediatric neurologist, including treating patients with autoimmune encephalitis, and researcher in neuro-immunology and movement disorders.

Dr. Jessica Panzer

“Our daughter had a severe case of autoimmune encephalitis and spent 8 months at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We are blessed that she has made a remarkable recovery and thankful for the team at CHOP. I just found out that her lead doctor, Dr. Jessica Panzer, passed away. Dr. Panzer was an amazing neurologist. She worked closely with Dr. Dalmau and was determined to find a cure for this horrible disease. During our darkest days in the hospital, Dr. Panzer was there for us, she was completely committed to helping us and our daughter. She was an amazing person. The world and certainly the AE community has lost an incredible person. She was only 41. I cried for hours after I heard the news. Dr. Panzer saved my girl’s life. If I could ask all of you to take a minute to say a prayer for Dr. Panzer, her husband and two young children. We have lost an amazing doctor and a person.” – Jeff B.
