Autoimmune encephalitis was featured at a November 21, meeting of the Osler Club sponsored by the John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch’s  (UTMB). Following a sit-down dinner, the 48 attendees, many of whom were physicians and physicians in training, filled the room to capacity for the program titled “The Power of Narratives When a Rare Disease is Unknown.” The lecture delivered jointly by Lynn Alperin with former AEA Executive Director, John Spencer, provided an opportunity to educate medical professionals about autoimmune encephalitis and its issues of diagnosis, treatment, recovery, and current research. Mrs. Alperin, herself a survivor of this disease, discussed narrative-based medicine and described her own battle with autoimmune encephalitis.

Speaker Lynn Alperin

UTMB was the first medical college in the University of Texas system and today remain a large medical center where physicians and other allied health professionals are trained. AEA is grateful to Lynn and Dr. Jack Alperin for arranging the event, and to UTMB staff for their hard work on making the event a success.
